A major leap forward in sustainable seaweed farming

Sirputis seaweed harvesting device, an innovative harvesting system developed by Lithuanian engineering companies Sirputis and Metal Production in close cooperation with Norwegian seaweed growers, has been officially granted a patent.

This modular harvesting device, developed based on real-life maritime experience, helps to address the main challenges of modern seaweed cultivation: safety, efficiency, and biomass quality. At its heart is a high-pressure water jet that gently separates the seaweed from the cultivation ropes, preserving the root system so that it can regrow naturally. As there are no blades and no need for sharpening, the harvested biomass remains clean and uncontaminated.

Key features

  • Integrated rope cleaning, removing roots and sea debris when seaweed seeds are replanted.
  • Adjustable components, adapted to different seaweed species and harvest sizes.
  • Modular compatibility with conveyors, tank loaders and crane systems
  • Easy installation on board and low-maintenance operation
  • Increased operator safety

Already successfully used in Norway, the seaweed harvesting device developed offers a more advanced, cleaner, and more efficient way to meet the needs of the global blue economy.
