Universal Positioning-Modular Cultivation, Automated Harvesting Technology of Nutrient Seaweed

UAB Sirputis is implementing the EU co-funded project “Universal Positioning-Modular Cultivation, Automated Harvesting Technology of Nutrient Seaweed.”

UAB Sirputis is initiating the project “Universal Positioning-Modular Cultivation, Automated Harvesting Technology of Nutrient Seaweed.” The project implemented by UAB Sirputis is aimed to develop an innovative technology of industrial-scale, universal modular cultivation, automated harvesting of edible seaweed, through the attraction of foreign investment into the Lithuanian company that creates high added value and focuses on experimental development and technology. Seaweed cultivation is a fast-growing sector with huge economic potential, both nationally and internationally. It can be used for various purposes such as food and food additives, feed, chemicals, biofuel production. Seaweed farming is also capable of having a positive effect on the ocean ecosystem.

Demand for seaweed products is expected to grow worldwide in the coming decades, making the need for industrial cultivation of this plant increasingly acute. Through R&D, the project will seek to develop a modular macroalgae production process (technology of universal-scale modular cultivation, automated harvesting of edible seaweed) that will be easily expanded and proportionally developed by enlarging the farm size, increasing the equipment capacity and macroalgae output. The key benefit and uniqueness of such technology make the entirety of all steps. This is an integrated process that can be easily scaled up and adjusted to industrial production at optimised costs. The latter is particularly relevant for larger-scale needs, such as human food, animal feed, fish feed, biofuels, etc.

The result of the project is planned to be a developed modular prototype of macroalgae production process and, on completion of the project, placing of a globally new technology of universal-scale modular cultivation, automated harvesting of edible seaweed on the market.

UAB Sirputis is implementing this Smart FDI project under the Measure No. 01.2.1-LVPA-T-848 of Priority Axis 1 “Strengthening Research and Development and Innovation” of the Operational Programme for EU Structural Funds Investments for 2014-2020.

The purpose of the Measure is to attract foreign investment into Research and/or Experimental Development and Innovations (hereinafter referred to as “R&DI”) in the Republic of Lithuania under the R&DI priority areas provided for in the Programme on the Implementation of Priority Areas of Research and Development and Innovations (Smart Specialisation) and Their Priorities approved by Resolution No 411 of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania of 30 April 2014 “On the Approval of Programme on the Implementation of Priority Areas of Research and Development and Innovations (Smart Specialisation) and Their Priorities.”

The project implemented by UAB Sirputis is aimed to develop an innovative technology of industrial-scale, universal modular cultivation, automated harvesting of edible seaweed, through the attraction of foreign investment into the Lithuanian company that creates high added value and focuses on experimental development and technology.

An investment amount allocated from the European Regional Development Fund for the implementation of the project is EUR 2,914,837.36.

Project duration: 24 months.
